Gaming's impact on society
Despite being revolutionary to the entertainment industry, when games were still little more than experiments, the general public, specifically the news, called the entire thing a 'fad' that would soon pass like any other. As they became more prominent in society, they also grew to become more accepted. However, as the games became more violent, it raised concern in parents that their children shouldn't have been playing them. After numerous complaints, the Entertainment Software Rating Board was created. Their job was to give a game an appropriate rating based on its content. Depending on the label, parents would know if it was an appropriate game for their younger children.
Despite that, the media still demonized video games in general, saying that it made children more violent. This was especially the case with games such as Mortal Kombat, with more realistic graphics and incredibly violent gameplay. After numerous experiments, however, it was proven, with empirical data, that the relationship between a child's violent tendencies and a game's violent content was virtually non-existant. To this day, however, people still see games as having negative effects on their children.
